2012 International Communications Quality and Reliability (CQR) Workshop

The IEEE CQR International Workshop is held annually with the purpose of bringing together industry and academic experts to present and discuss communications quality, reliability and security issues as they relate to real world issues. The output from the workshops adds to the community's body of knowledge and serves to inform, help form opinion, and to assist in the development of best practice and relevant standards.

Continuing the tradition of this series of workshops, CQR 2012 will provide an international technical forum for experts from industry and academia to exchange ideas and present results of ongoing research in the areas listed below.  This year, special focus will be on the challenging issues related to the requirements, metrics, measurement, management, and dissemination of Communications Quality & Reliability.

The Workshop has two program tracks: Industry-focused Strategic Track and Technical Paper Track.

For the Strategic Track, 3 themes are organized into three segments with one segment on each day and there are 3 Keynote speakers: Hossein Eslambolchi, Chairman & CEO, 2020 Venture Partners; Scott Yow, VP, Technology Architecture, Cisco Systems; and David Geltner, VP, nPhase. The content of the Strategic Track is as follows:

Segment 1 (Tuesday, May 15):
Quality, Reliability, and Security for Smart Networks

Chair Andy Rollins, NSN

The explosion of mobile applications is defining the network.  Mobile browsing, mobile video, mobile gaming, and mobile VoIP are placing new demands on the network as users have high expectations of bandwidth, service quality, and reliability.  The increased availability of these applications through the expanding penetration of smart devices served by carrier networks and the diverged characteristics of mobile applications introduce challenges to the operators for service delivery.  The operator goal is to build the Smart Network that is able to dynamically adapt to the application for optimum service delivery.  Quality, reliability, and security are essential components of the Smart Network.  This segment will discuss the impact of smart devices on the networks, the importance of quality, reliability, and security, and innovative approaches to achieve optimum service delivery.

Segment 2 (Wednesday, May 16):
Data Visibility for Quality and Reliable Service Delivery

Chair: Mike Stewart, Syniverse

The key to delivering an excellent subscriber experience is to have an understanding of the health of the services being delivered. Unseen issues or degradations are impossible to act upon and correct. Operators need visibility from the physical media (Layer 1)  to the application layer (Layer 7) to be able to optimize service delivery, proactively detect issues and to correct them before the subscriber’s service is impacted. This segment will examine implementations of data reporting architectures and methods to provide actionable intelligence that can be used to enhance the service delivery quality and customer experience.

Segment 3 (Thursday, May 17):
The Rise of the Machines: Exploring Quality, Reliability, and Security in a Machine Driven World

Chair: Mark Adams, Cox Communications

Machine to machine (M2M) allows networked machines to exchange information and perform actions without the manual assistance of humans.  M2M is expected to add >50B devices to the network this decade.  Satellite Navigation, Smart Grid, Meters, Remote Cameras, and Point of Sale Systems are some examples of M2M applications now being rolled-out.   Today’s subscriber-centric networks are built to support a global population of 8B people.  The impact of machines to the network will be significant and requires careful planning to prevent degraded quality, reliability, or security issues.  This segment will examine the impact of M2M and approaches that can be taken to ensure that quality, reliability, and security are maintained.

Technical Paper Submission Guidelines

Papers should describe original work, and be 4-6 two-column and single-spaced pages in IEEE conference style.  The first  page should indicate the email addresses of the corresponding author. Paper submission must be made via EDAS: http://edas.info/N11589

Papers accepted for CQR 2012 will be included in the Workshop Proceedings, IEEE XPlore, and EI Index, with the exception that IEEE reserves the right to exclude any paper from distribution after the conference (e.g., removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not presented at the conference. Papers that are removed from IEEE Xplore will not be available through the EI Index.
