Topic: Reliability Challenges and Mitigation Options in NFV Infrastructure

Abstract

The Telecommunications industry is in the midst of a major transition to a Cloud-based infrastructure in support of Network Function Virtualization (NFV). The goals are to lower TCOs by OPEX/CAPEX savings using standard IT technologies like virtualization and building on open source industry efforts for cloud management like Openstack/CloudStack and OpenDayLight, and secondly to achieve higher operational and foundational flexibilities. These efforts will lead to better business opportunities and profits. NFVI is expected to provide the same level of service availability as in the traditional network deployment. The onus of resiliency to achieve high Reliability Availability Serviceability (RAS) capabilities is on the middleware (or the virtualized infrastructure management and orchestration systems) that maintains a global resource view across all virtual Network Functions (vNFs) by monitoring and collecting the infrastructure performance and health indicators for anomaly detection to avoid or prevent failure and to provide failure identification to isolate and replace marginal or failed infrastructure elements.

This talk will start by highlighting the reliability challenges that come with advanced process technologies and higher levels of integration. Next, the proposed platform and infrastructure requirements to enable the dynamic provisioning of the infrastructure to achieve high level of RAS capabilities will be discussed.
