IEEE Communications Society
Communications Quality and Reliability Workshop 2008

The program for the 2008 CQR Workshop follows the structure of previous years; three themed days outlined below but with a difference.  The themed sessions will occupy the morning of each workshop day.  Afternoon sessions will consist of a choice of two parallel streams.  Firstly, there will be a Technical Program of presentations with an academic orientation.  Second, and building on the positive feedback from last year, there will be facilitated panel discussions drawing from the experience of recognised industry practitioners and leaders.

Keynote Speakers: Adam Drobot of Telcordia, Kevin Peters of AT&T and Robert Nowill of BT.  Please see the Keynote Speakers' page.

Executive Panel (EP) and Distinguished Experts Panel (DEP): Kelly Krick of Nortels and Christine Sorenson of AT&T are the organizers of these two panels, respectively.   The topics are

EP: Next Generation Networks – What is going on?
DEP: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery- Today’s Challenges

For more information, please see the 2008 Panels page.

Day 1: Global Operations

Business today is increasingly global in nature.  Supporting those global businesses are Global Networks.  Networks like these have challenges to provide timely communications and meet these customer’s expectations of quality and reliability.

Customers of these networks expect low latency, predictable bandwidth, and simple management of their networks.

This segment will examine how the communications industry can help its customers meet their requirements for these far reaching networks.  This would include the installation, design, management and maintenance of these systems.

Topics may include:

    ·        Airline, ground, and sea package shipping company delivery and tamper detection requirements
    ·        Pharmaceutical, IT company networks (e-mail, web communications)
    ·        News, Entertainment, and Print media
    ·        Government and Military Networks

Day 2: Next-Generation Networks: Secure, Quality and Reliable Service Delivery

Telcos are now architecting the Next Generation Network (NGN). The NGN is all-IP supporting Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) for seamless service delivery as mobile users roam. The demands for mobility, security, quality of service (QoS), and high reliability in the NGN place unprecedented requirements on IP networks. The purpose of this segment is to bring technology leaders together to discuss NGN network architectures and solutions to deliver quality services securely over reliable networks.   This segment is intended to answer the questions:

    ·        What are the NGN services and applications and how the consumer will use them?
    ·        Why do Security, QoS, and Reliability matter to the network subscriber?
    ·        Where are we in realizing the NGN?
    ·        What is the vision for the future Next-NGN

Day 3:  Network Disruption and Recovery

Disaster recovery continues to be a hot topic for operators, their suppliers and customers too.  The industry’s capability has been rigorously tested in recent times through natural and other disruptive influences.  In recognition of the continuing importance of this subject we will revisit it for 2008 and we will address issues like:

    ·        What new threats have emerged or are on the horizon?
    ·        How can standards help?
    ·        What can be learned from mutual aid arrangements and how can these be improved?
    ·        What has happened in Europe?
    ·        How to engage with customers, suppliers and the media during major incidents.
    ·        How does security link to business continuity and disaster recovery to deliver a seamless resilience experience?

The Technical  Paper segment of CQR2008 covers various aspects of QoS and Reliability for the following networks/services:

  • Grid and Distributed Computing
  • Mobile and Ad Hoc Networks
  • Overlay Networks
  • Multimedia Networks and VoIP Services
  • VPN, MPLS and Mullticast Services
  • Web Services
  • Broadband Audio Visual Services
  • Current and Next-generation Internet
  • Emerging Technologies and Services

The detailed technical area includes:

  • Measurements Techniques
  • Network Architecture and Design
  • Network Security
  • Operations, Administration and Maintenance
  • QoS Metrics and Measurement
  • QoS Policy and Assessment
  • Traffic Control
  • Traffic Modeling and Characterization

Technical Paper Submission Guidelines

Papers should describe original work, and be six (6) two-column and single-spaced pages or less in IEEE conference style.  The cover page should clearly indicate the complete postal and electronic mailing addresses, as well as the phone and fax numbers of the contact author. Paper submissions must be made electronically via e-mail attachment in PDF format to
cqr2008-submission@ieee-cqr.org .
Hardcopy submissions will not be accepted.
